Platform Speaking Events

Extemporaneous Speaking (Extemp): The student will draw three current events topics taken from current magazines and will choose one topic. The student will have 30 minutes to prepare a speech. 7 minute max. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

Original Oratory (O.O.): The student will prepare an original speech, usually persuasive, on a topic. Must be memorized. 10 minute max. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

|
Television Newscasting: The student will be given a packet of news, weather, and sports information and will have 30 minutes to cut the material down to a 5 minute newscast.

|
Impromptu Speaking: The student will have three minutes maximum to prepare a four minute speech on a drawn topic. Topics are normally quotes or phrases. (NFL Nationals Consolation Event)

After-Dinner Speaking (A.D.S.): The student will prepare an original, humorous speech on a topic. Must be memorized. 8 minute max.

Interpretation Events
|

Dramatic Interpretation (D.I.): The student will present a scene from a play or prose involving any number of characters. Emphasis is on vocal and physical characterization. Selection should have a serious cutting. Monologues are acceptable. Movement is restricted. Must be memorized. 10 minute max. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

Humorous Interpretation (H.I.): The student will present a scene from a play or prose involving any number of characters. Emphasis is on vocal and physical characterization. Selection should have a light cutting. Monologues are acceptable. Movement is restricted. Must be memorized. 10 minute max. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

Duo Interpretation: Two students will present a scene from a play or prose involving at least two characters. Off-stage focus must be used. Manuscripts must be used. 10 minute max. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

Storytelling: The student will present a story (published, unpublished, retold, or original). May be humorous or serious. Movement and characterization are allowed. 8 minute max. (NFL Nationals Consolation Event)

|
Prose Interpretation: The student will present a piece of prose literature (short story, novel, nonfiction) using physical and vocal characterization. Manuscript must be used. 10 minute max. (NFL Nationals Supplementary Event)

Poetry Interpretation: The student will present a poem, or a group of poems dealing with a common theme. Manuscript must be used. 10 minute max. (NFL Nationals Supplementary Event)

Debate Events
|

Lincoln-Douglas Debate (L.D.): This is a one-on-one debate over a proposition of value. The times are 6:3:7:3:4:6:3 and each debater is allowed three minutes of preparation time during the round. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

Student Congress: This is a mock legislature session held separately from all other events. Students propose, debate, and vote on bills/resolutions. NFL parliamentary procedure is followed. Robert's Rules of Order are followed in the event that NFL rules do not cover an area. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

Public Forum Debate: This a two-on-two team debate over a proposition of fact. The times are 4:4:2:4:4:2:2:2:3:1:1. Each team is allowed two minutes of preparation time during the round. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

Cross-Examination Debate (CX): This a two-on-two team debate over a proposition of policy. The times are 8:3:8:3:8:3:8:3:5:5:5:5. Each team is allowed five minutes of preparation time during the round. (NFL Nationals Main Event)

Acting Events (these events do not earn NFL points, but they earn Thespian points)

Solo Acting: The student will present a one-character scene from a play. Blocking must utilized. One hand prop and one stage prop are allowed. Must be memorized. 8 minute max.

Duet Acting: Two students will present a two character scene from a play. Blocking must be utilized. Two hand props and two stage props are allowed. Must be memorized. 10 minute max.
|
|

|
Pantomime: The student will present a silent, solo scene. Any number of characters may be portrayed. No props, makeup, or costumes are allowed. The contestant may sit on a chair or stool. 5 minute max.

|
Duet Improvisational Acting: Two students will have 5 minutes to come up with a short 7 minute scene on a drawn topic.

|

|
Duet Musical Theatre: Two students will present a selection from a musical. 5 minutes max.
